The UK requires your car tyres to have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm in a continuous band around the central three-quarters of the tyre, if you are below this you are risking a £2,500 fine and 3 penalty points per tyre. You will often find that tyre manufacturers will mould tread bars into the tyres at roughly 1.6mm. If these bars are visible your tyres will soon become illegal and unsafe. Along with most manufacturers, JB Autocentre recommends that your tyres are changed at a tread depth of 3mm. A tread depth of 1.6 millimetres in wet weather at 50 mph means it takes an extra two car lengths (8 metres) to stop than if your tread was 3 millimetres.
